The Directors If you speak of SA music pioneers in the same breath then Kalawa Jazmee, the independent, black-owned label will definitely be on the tip of your tongue. The groundbreaking label spearheaded the evolution of kwaito music in SA through the efforts of its founders and massive acts they natured including Brothers of peace, Boom Shaka, Bongo Muffin, Trompies, Mafikizolo, Thebe and Alaska.

It all started in the 90’s when the talented trio of pianist and producer Don Laka and popular house DJs Oscar Mondlongwa (Oskido) and Christos came together to create a sound never heard before on the SA music scene.

At a meeting a Laka’s Hillbrow flat, Oscar brought his DJ friend Christos to the party. The three got on like a house on fire and started cooking up music that combined house and Laka’s instrumentals. Soon kalawa Records went form being an idea into a reality.

In 1991 kalawa released BOP and the band had a huge hit with the song ‘Makwerekwere’. By 1992 it had sold 20 000 copies independently, proving that signing with a veteran music label was not the only path to a hit single. Things were about to get even bigger at kalawa with the development of super group Boom Shaka, who exploded onto the SA music scenes the first kwaito sensation.

Oscar was the time playing in clubs like Razzmattazz and Arena and at those sessions he discovered charismatic singer Lebo and rapper Thembi; Junior, a raggamaffin who’d previously been with the group P.O.C and a pretty boy vocalist Theo.
